The Belle Plaine High School boys’ basketball team posted a pair of nonconference victories to conclude the regular season last week, blasting Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial 75-56 and New Ulm 74-44.
Belle Plaine, which finished the season 11-13 overall, 5-9 in the Minnesota River Conference, received the No. 5 seed for the Section 2AA, North Subsection Tournament that began Tuesday night after this edition of the Herald went to press. The winner of that game will be back in action 7 p.m. this Thursday against the winner of No. 1 seed Waterville-Elysian-Morristown and No. 8 Le Sueur-Henderson. The first and second rounds are all at the gyms of the highest remaining seeds. The rest of the North Subsection on Tuesday had No. 2 Jordan against No. 7 Montgomery-Lonsdale and No. 3 Kenyon-Wanamingo against No. 6 Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial.
Thursday night’s semifinal winners will play for the subsection championship next Monday night at Minnesota State University, Mankato’s Bresnan Arena. H.S. Girls' Basketball:

Tigers Spot St. Peter 23 Points
Then Lose by 2 in Playoff Opener

by Dan Ruud
The Belle Plaine High School girls’ basketball team’s one-game run in the playoffs mirrored its regular season – a very slow start followed by a strong finish.
The Tigers, who in the regular season lost 11 of their first 12 games before winning nine of their last 12, fell behind host St. Peter 23-0 before rallying to grab a two-point lead in the second half then finally succumbing 63-61 in last Tuesday night’s Section 2AA, North Subsection Tournament opener. Belle Plaine was the No. 7 seed and St. Peter No. 2.
The Saints went on to crush Jordan 50-26 in Friday night’s second round and Le Sueur-Henderson 62-42 in Monday night’s subsection championship game in Mankato.

Scott West Team Sixth at State; Kroells Runner-Up at 189 Pounds

The Scott West wrestling team closed the 2009-10 wrestling season this past weekend by traveling to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul for the Minnesota State Class 2A Wrestling Tournament. Scott West was making its 11th team trip to the tournament and it was the team’s seventh appearance in the last eight years.
“That’s a pretty consistent run and is really quite impressive when you think about it,” states Scott West coach Darren Ripley.
The 2010 tournament would start with the Class AA opening round of individual competition on Wednesday afternoon with Scott West having eight wrestlers in competition.
Sophomores Gabe Fogarty (119) and Michael Kroells (189) were the two Panthers who picked up wins in that opening round as each recorded a pin. Fogarty’s came in the second period against UCB’s Samuel Klingfus, while Kroells’ was against Monticello’s Joe Jude in the first period.
Meanwhile, Luke Betchwars (103) lost a 9-2 decision to PEM’s Aaron Haley, Jake Siegle lost a 3-2 decision to BSM’s Alex Peck at 130, Tyler Zilverberg lost a 9-7 overtime decision to Worthington’s Joey Kinley at 135.
