Governor Walz’s office issued new guidance that increases the occupancy for churches to reopen at 25% capacity with a maximum of 250 people starting on Wednesday, May 27. The new executive order allows places of worship, weddings and funerals to reopen with strict safety measures in place. Earlier in the week Walz announced that churches could reopen but with no more than ten people inside at a time.

In a statement by Walz issued on Saturday, May 23 he said “I understand the toll the pandemic has taken on the spiritual health of Minnesotans. As the CDC allows for places of worship to reopen, I have partnered with faith leaders to ensure there are clear public health guidelines to do so as safely as possible.”

The amended order comes a day after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued new guidance allowing for reopening places of worship. Lutheran and Catholic churches leaders also announced earlier in the week that they planned to defy Gov. Tim Walz’s closure and reopen May 26.
