Every year, a small group of women from Belle Plaine, Carver, and Jordan come together to host a Girls Fishing Contest.

The 2021 tournament was held on Lake Waconia on Saturday, Feb. 20.

Co-organizer Bridgette Kelly said the idea was born four years ago after some of the women met through a group called Women Anglers of Minnesota.

“It’s just a day for all of us to get together and hang out. We don’t see each other a lot throughout the year,” she said.

The women compete for fishing related prizes and keep track of the score based on the total number of fish caught and the length of each fish.

Co-organizer Angie Sellnow said she enjoys having the opportunity to catch up with her friends and have an event that’s just for women.

“We are all doing it on our own without any help from the guys,” said Sellnow. “We are baiting our own hooks and catching fish all on our own.”

About 10 women competed in the 2021 tournament.
