Scott County Sheriff's Office

The  annual Scott County Sheriff's Office Youth Fishing Derby is going virtual this year due to health and safety concerns for prospective participants.

The event will run from Friday, July 31, through Sunday, Aug. 2, the sheriff's office announced.

Interested participants can register online for the derby and submit a photo of themselves with their fish for a chance to win a prize through a random drawing. To be considered, entrants should post a picture of their child and their “catch of the day” on the Scott County Sheriff’s Office Annual (Virtual) Youth Facebook Event Page.  Please include name, age of participant, kind of fish, and which Scott County Lake the fish was caught on.  Event page:

“The Youth Fishing Derby is a community event that teaches kids to fish, connect them with the outdoors and develop trusting relationships with deputies and other emergency responders within our community,” said Sheriff Luke Hennen per a release.  “The event will look a little different this year, but our mission remains the same - continuing to have positive law enforcement-community interactions by connecting on a personal level.”

Those who do not have fishing gear may have access to a limited number of fishing rods and reels and life jackets. Those interested should indicate their needs on their registration form, and a deputy will drop it off in person. Equipment is available only to those who have not participated in past derbies.

The sheriff's office will announce the winners on the Scott County Sheriff’s Office Facebook Event Page on Monday, August 3.  Prizes may be picked up from the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at 301 Fuller Street South in Shakopee by appointment only.
