An Excel Energy crew works to restore power after a transformer blew early Monday morning, Sept. 7.

A transformer blew in the 300 block of State St. W., causing multiple power outages for most residents in Belle Plaine and nearby townships on Xcel Energy during the early morning of Monday, Sept. 7. Those with MN Valley Electric Cooperative were not affected.

Xcel Energy sent a substation crew from Mankato to Belle Plaine around 8:30 a.m. and had it restored by early afternoon.

According to a post by the Belle Plaine Police Department, a squirrel was the cause of the blown transformer.
