Longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 144 Ruth Westphal was named Auxiliary Member of the Year.

Longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 144 Ruth Westphal was named Auxiliary Member of the Year.

Westphal has been a member of the unit since 2003, served as president for five years, membership for nine years, and treasurer for eight years.

Treasurer Irene Plonski, Secretary Dorothy Koepp and Member Connie Zurn submitted a letter on Westphal’s behalf, nominating her for the award.

“Ruth is a very capable leader and shows her love and caring for all veterans, military and their families by always going the extra mile. We are very fortunate to have Ruth as our president,” the letter said.

The letter explained how Westphal goes the extra mile to introduce relevant and meaningful organizations to the members and how she makes a difference out in the community as well.

“She is very family oriented with two children and three grandchildren and assists people in need of rides to medical appointments, grocery shopping and visiting people in need,” the letter said.

Westphal was presented the award by Third District President Linda Kelly and Suzette Maluchnik on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Third District Family get together.
