What seemed like non-stop emergency sirens pierced through what would have been an otherwise quiet Friday evening in Le Sueur.

At 8:32 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, the Minnesota State Patrol, Le Sueur Police Department, Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office, Sibley County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota Department of Transportation all responded to a fatal car crash that occurred along northbound Highway 169 and County Road 8.

According to the State Patrol report, Howard Paul Sweiger, 65, of Mankato entered the northbound lane of Highway 169 from the exit ramp at County Road 8 going the wrong direction and collided with Luis Eriberto Tamay Lema, 40, of St. Louis Park, who was traveling northbound on Highway 169.

Sweiger’s Ford Explorer collided with Lema’s Kenworth Conventional on the interstate, and Sweiger, who was not wearing his seatbelt, died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Lema suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Ridgeview Le Sueur Medical Center.
