Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

In conversation this week I learned that the Belle Plaine Superintendent of Schools does not believe that Belle Plaine deserves a new high school. I disagree.

In an older conversation with a school board member who has opposed new buildings I was informed we needed 1600 students to need a new high school building. It is hard for me to track the school population but I believe that if the 450 students who live in the Belle Plaine school district but go to school elsewhere were to return to Belle Plaine schools we would have 1600 students.

Talk to your children about our aging buildings (that you probably studied in). Talk to your neighbors about what kind of school you think your children deserve. Visit the school at the end of the day when students are changing and boarding buses for home. Ask yourself if our students are as safe as they could be. Visit a school board meeting and ask what the facility plan is. It is your money and your children. Stand up and be counted.
