Belle Plaine and Norwood Young America tussled to the buzzer on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 6, in Norwood Young America.

Karim Tolbert’s free throw with 20 seconds remaining pulled the Tigers even at 50, then Luke Luskey’s steal and lay-in gave the Tigers a 52-50 advantage with five seconds to play.

It was Luskey’s lone basket of the contest.

The Tigers’ defense prevented the Raiders from even attempting a game-winning or tying field goal, and the locals improved to 3-2 in the Minnesota River Conference and 3-4 overall.

Tolbert and Cade Morrison paced the Tigers with 12 points against NYA. Jackson Kruger added 11 and Ryan Retzer six. Luskey and Tolbert had five assists each.

Retzer and Kruger, who combined to shoot 8-of-13, had particularly solid efforts, according to Fogarty.

“We are getting better each week,” said Coach Paul Fogarty, whose Tigers welcomed Tri- City United (2-1, 3-4) on Tuesday night, Feb. 9. (Results were unavailable at press time.)

Reflecting Back

The Tigers have won three of five games since an 0-2 start that included a blowout loss to Jordan and an 80-61 setback to Mayer Lutheran.

The two defeats during the stretch were a two-point overtime loss at New Ulm and a four-point loss to Southwest Christian. The Stars are 4-1 (5-3 overall) and in second place in the MRC.

“Mayer taught us a lot,” Fogarty said of the team’s second game. “We have to limit our turnovers. If we do, we can be pretty good.”

Looking Ahead

On Friday night, Feb. 12, the locals welcome Mayer Lutheran. The Crusaders sit atop the MRC with a 6-0 mark and are 7-0 overall.

The Tigers travel to LeSueur-Henderson on Monday, Feb. 15, for a rematch with the Giants.
