Jan. 2: 56-52 Win over Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial
The Tigers bided their time en route to defeat the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights on Thursday, Jan. 2, on their home court.
A hot-shooting Cade Morrison came out slinging with several shots that found their mark in and outside the arc.
After back-to-back blocks on Lake Crystal, Morrison finished with a bucket to put the Tigers up 10-8 early in the first half.
Minutes later, Morrison fired another 3-pointer to put Belle Plaine up 16-11.
Belle Plaine remained the busier team on both sides of the court as they made their way to a 27-16 lead after Karim Tolbert landed the bucket, drawing the foul in the process. From the line, Tolbert’s free throw found its mark.
The Tigers forced the Knights to settle for 3-pointers with varying results.
Tiger forward Josh Gregory landed a 3-pointer as the half was drawing to a close, giving the Tigers the 30-16 lead.
The Knights clawed back marginally but settled for a 36-29 deficit heading into the locker room.
The Knights then came out hungry and landed an early second-half 3-pointer to keep Belle Plaine honest. They continued to be more intentional with their shot choices and came within inches of taking the lead from the Tigers who led 42-41. A Knights’ block prompted a full timeout from Belle Plaine head coach Paul Fogarty.
Tolbert then launched a solid shot to put the Tigers up 44-41. Tiger forward Dylan Kahle then burned a defender and finished with an easy shot for two more points.
Belle Plaine then forced the Knights to play their game and were more accurate in their shooting as the Tigers took the contest 64-52.
Eight Tigers scored, including Gregory, who led the team with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Morrison with 15 points and Tolbert with 11 points and 6 rebounds.
Jan. 4: 61-47 Loss to Watertown-Mayer
The Tigers had ample opportunity but couldn’t quite dial in their shooting in their non-conference matchup against Watertown-Mayer on Saturday, Jan. 4.
Trailing at the half 28-19, the Tigers fought back in the second, but Watertown-Mayer seemed determined to shut down much of the Tigers’ momentum and outscored Belle Plaine 33-28 in the second half.
The Tigers had some success, particularly from Mychal Fisel, who knocked down 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Watertown Mayer’s defense proved to be just a bit too scrappy for the Tigers as they dropped the contest 61-47.
Jan. 6: 75-61 Loss to Glencoe-Silver Lake
Morrison continued to let his will be known as he amassed 17 points against Glencoe-Silver Lake on Monday, Jan. 6.
Staying within striking distance at the close of the first half (36-34), the Tigers had a bit of ground to make up against GSL on the road.
Reece Schwirtz of GSL powered his way to 21 points against the Tigers and contributed to his team outscoring Belle Plaine 39-27 in the second half.
The Tigers had to settle for second place as they took the 75-61 loss.
