Third-seeded Glencoe-Silver Lake bottled up the Tigers’ offense in the semi-finals of the 2AA North Subsection girls basketball tournament on Friday night, March 19, in Belle Plaine, ending the Tigers’ quest for a second-straight appearance in the subsection finals with a 49-35 victory.

“We just couldn’t get over the hump,” said Coach Mindy Chevalier, whose team finished 13-4 and earned a share of the Minnesota River Conference championship.

“Give all the credit to G-SL. They pressured our shooters with their match-up zone, and we couldn’t seem to attack on the dribble. We had very few good looks from three.”

Despite a tough shooting night with the Tigers shooting 21 percent, it was 36-31 G-SL with seven minutes to play when a three-point attempt from Lizzy Schmidt and a two-point attempt from Sarah Lenz didn’t fall.

“We were never out of it,” said Chevalier. “We just couldn’t string any runs together. We were hopeful that this wasn’t the end; we had some good things going.”

Lauren Johnson had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers, who outrebounded G-SL 28-23.

The Tigers trailed just 24-21 at halftime, but Glencoe-Silver Lake controlled the tempo throughout the game and especially in the second half.

Victory Over TCU

It took only 6 minutes and 42 seconds for the Tigers to take a 21-0 lead over seventh-seeded TCU in last Wednesday’s section opener, a 59-29 victory.

The Tigers led 44-13 at halftime.

Sarah Lenz had four three-point baskets among her 20 points, and the Tigers shot 8-of-15 from behind the arc. Lizzy Schmidt had eight points, six rebounds, and six steals. Leah Lenz had nine points, five rebounds, and four steals.
