After a convincing win over Norwood Young America a week ago Monday, the BPHS girls basketball team struggled out of the gate in Thursday night’s Minnesota River Conference tilt with Tri-City United (0-2, 0-5).

But the Tigers (3-0, 4-1) left little doubt of the outcome, scoring the first 20 points of the second half to turn a 27-20 contest into a 47-20 advantage en route to a 62-36 victory.

“We started out strong but had a little lull in the first half,” said Coach Mindy Chevalier. “We came out in the second half and picked up the defense which created our offense.”

Lizzy Schmidt had a breakout game, scoring 20 points and grabbing six rebounds. Lauren Johnson had 18 points and seven boards.

Leah Lenz had just two points but held TCU’s best player to only four points on 2-of-9 shooting. She also contributed four assists and eight rebounds.

Hayley O’Brien had four assists for the Tigers, who shot 50 percent from the field, including 7-of-15 from three-point land.

The Tigers committed just seven turnovers for the second straight game.

“Sarah Lenz and McKenna Ziemke continue to control the tempo of the game from the guard spot,” said Chevalier.

Belle Plaine tested itself against the MRC’s other unbeaten, Mayer Lutheran (4-0, 4-1), on Tuesday night, Feb. 2.

The result was not available at press time. The Tigers will play host to LeSueur-Henderson (1-3, 2-3) on Friday night, Feb. 5.
