Jordan  5,  BP  2

The Tiger tennis team met with an old adversary last Thursday, Sept. 24.

The Jordan Jaguar girls tennis team has moved into the Wright County Conference for competition this year, leaving the MRC after a three-year reign near the top of the standings.

“I was unsure how we’d stack up this year,” said Tigers’ coach Melissa Hanson.

The Jaguars showed some of their mettle in Thursday’s non-conference affair, dropping just seven games while sweeping four singles matches in a 5-2 victory.

Highlights for the Tigers include Kadence Bran de Leon and Lauren Johnson earning a three-set victory at No. 1 doubles, improving to 5-0 on the season as a tandem.

The pair dominated the first set with strong net play and serving for a 6-1 victory before dropping the second set, 6-4.

They were facing a 4-2 deficit in the third set before rallying to win 6-4.

“(They) found their rhythm again,” said Hanson.

Courtney Eppen and Amilia Messner had the most impressive Tiger performance, according to Hanson, winning 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

“Courtney and Amilia have really begun to gel as partners … and this win was their best play this year.”

Hanson tried a new pair at No. 3 doubles, pairing Lydia Sparby with Elliana Fahey. The duo had a lead in the third set but couldn’t put it away.

“All of the girls have done a great job of moving back and forth between singles and doubles,” Hanson said. “Their flexibility will only help them grow as tennis players and further the success of our team.”

Sibley East  5,  BP  2

Sibley East took a 5-2 MRC victory over the Tigers on Tuesday, Sept. 22, in Arlington.

“I knew going into the match that it would be extremely close,” Hanson said. “We literally were a handful of points away from victory.”

Hanson said Sibley East’s singles line-up is its strength, and she was hopeful the Tigers could sweep the doubles matches and steal one from the singles line-up.

Bran de Leon and Johnson won in straight sets at No. 1 doubles, and Eppen and Messer did the same at No. 2.

Fahey and Nagel lost a three-set match at No. 3 doubles, as did Kayla Streich at No. 4 singles, dropping two sets by tiebreaker and winning the middle-set 6-1.
