Very little is normal these days, and that’s part of the reason the Belle Plaine Tigers played Minnesota River Conference foe Sibley East in a consolation match of the Section 2A Tennis Tournament.

Since there is no state tennis tournament or individual section tournament this season, a consolation bracket was played out in the Section 2A girls tennis competition.

Sibley East, who finished second to LS-H in the MRC this season, emerged a 5-2 winner in last Tuesday’s contest, played in the wind at the Arlington tennis courts.

“It was a very competitive match,” said Coach Melissa Hanson.

The Tigers lost in straight sets, although very tight sets, at No. 1 and No. 4 singles, and Kadence Bran De Leon and Lauren Johnson dropped their first match of the season at No. 1 doubles.

Sibley East’s top singles player had suffered an injury and was unable to play No. 1 singles, so she paired up on the Wolverines top doubles team.

“It’s always though when a team’s top player is at number one doubles,” Hanson said. “It was a very competitive match and challenging with the wind. It was a tough way to end a very successful season for both seniors.”

Bran de Leon and Johnson were defeated 6-4, 6-3.

Emma Breimhorst played her “best match of the year,” according to Hanson, in falling 6-4, 7-6 at No. 1 singles.

Lydia Sparby won her opening set at No. 3 singles 6-1 before dropping set two, 6-4. Sparby rebounded to win the third set by an identical 6-1 score.

“Lydia came out in that third set, really focused and determined to play the same style that she had in the first,” Hanson said.

Courtney Eppen and Amilia Messer won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. It was their sixth-consecutive victory to end the season.
