Four more dual meet victories extended the Panthers’ winning streak to 14 after a season-opening loss, and with the season winding down, Section 2AA appears to be up for grabs.

“I think our guys are wrestling pretty well right now,” said Coach Jerold Stauffacher. “We still have some little things to continue to improve on. As I said early in the season, doing the little things right will pay off.”

The Panthers dominated Eagan (62-18) and Henry Sibley (76-3) in a triangular at Eagan on Saturday, Feb. 13.

Last Wednesday, Feb. 10, the Panthers defeated Eden Prairie (61-13) and Osseo (53-23). Both Eden Prairie and Osseo are among the “Lean and Mean” in the Guillotine’s AAA rankings.

“We have had guys change some things they normally did in matches and it is resulting in some wins for them,” Staufacher said. “Some are building confidence, and that is what we want.”

Looking Ahead

Scott West put its streak on the line this week when it traveled to Becker on Tuesday night, Feb. 16, but results were unavailable by press time. Becker is ranked #6 in Class AA.

On Saturday, Feb. 20, the Panthers face two more tough challenges when it travels to New Prague to wrestle the #12 ranked Trojans and Owatonna, ranked #8 in Class AAA.

Anticipating the Future

Stauffacher said the Section 2AA tournament will be as wide open as ever this season, with any of the top five seeds having a chance to emerge.

Watertown Mayer/Mayer Lutheran, who defeated the Panthers in the season-opening dual, TCU (whom the Panthers defeated), Hutchinson, and Scott West are all getting attention in the polls. Plus, add St. Peter to the mix after its dual meet victory over TCU.

“2AA is still a deep section,” Stauffacher said. “It might have a team sitting at the top right now that is different than in years past, but teams like St. Peter and Watertown-Mayer have always had (good) wrestlers but this season seem to have the parts to make a run. We are right there with them, I think. Any of the top five teams could represent us at the Super Section. It will come down to those teams that stay healthy and are able to win close matches on those dates.”
