For a team that is hoping to regain its status as the King of the Section 2AA wrestling hill, a week off after six straight dual victories is not an ideal way to continue the momentum it had gained.

After a season opening defeat to Watertown Mayer/Mayer Lutheran, Scott West has rolled its way to six straight wins. It was expected to wrestle four more duals last week, including a match with Class AAA Woodbury, who like the Panthers are receiving consideration in it respective class rankings.

But, in these unpredictable times, both of the Panthers' tri-angulars were canceled last week.

“Not wrestling this week is not ideal,” said Coach Jerold Stauffacher, “but to lose a week now and be able to continue on hopefully the rest of the year is a trade-off I will make.”

A trio of Panthers have won each of their seven matches this season, including Matt Randolph (7-0), Zach Tracy (7-0), and Tory Pumper (7-0).

Landon Church and Caleb Tracy are 6-1, and Jack Weis (5-2), Luke Fogarty (4-2), and Leo Siekmann (4-2) have had good starts.

According to the Jan. 20 rankings in the Guillotine, Randolph is ranked #1 at 106 pounds, Zach Tracy is #4 at 120, and Fogarty is #8 at 160 pounds. The Panthers are among four teams from Section 2AA recognized in the “Lean and Mean,” along with Hutchinson, Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran, and TCU.

The next rankings come out on Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Looking Ahead

The team continues to focus on being its best at season’s end.

“Guys are continuing to work hard and get better,” Stauffacher said. “Obviously, our goal is to be wrestling our best at the end of the season, not the last week in January or the first week of February. Each week we are working on little things to make guys better individually and that should pay off for the team.”

The Panthers welcome Mankato West and Minnetonka on Thursday, Feb. 4 and Sibley East and Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted on Friday, Feb. 5.
