On Thursday, May 23, Belle Plaine High School’s boys’ and girls’ track and field teams competed in the subsection meet. Belle Plaine hosted the meet inviting 6 other teams: St Peter, Minnesota Valley Lutheran, Le Sueur Henderson, Tri-City United, Sibley East, and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.
The girls’ track team had a very successful evening. They won the subsection meet by earning a total of 207 points. The girls’ team is sending athletes to compete in 16 out of the 18 events at the section meet.
McKenna Herrmann, a junior, took home first place in the 800m run.
Junior Jaylen Struck-Schmitz had a great performance at Thursday’s meet. She earned first place in the 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, and long jump. She will move on to compete at the section meet.
McKenna Ziemke, a freshman, took first place in the 200m dash with a time of 27.08 seconds and fourth place in triple jump.
Adding to the team’s success, freshman Malina Koepp took fourth place in the 800 and first place in triple jump with a jump of 34’ 10.5”.
Shot putters, Sarah Lenz and Leah Lenz, earned their spots at the section meet by taking second and third place, respectively, and junior Madi McGrane, threw a 114’ 6” in discus taking first place.
Other notable individual finishes for Belle Plaine included Alaina Herrmann with a third place finish in pole vault, Tavasia Hill with a second place finish in the 400m dash with a time of 1:04.64, and Rylee Bell with a second place finish in the 300m hurdles.
The girls’ 4x800m (Savanna DeYoung, Cassie Stolt, Malina Koepp, McKenna Herrmann), 4x200m (Sydney Meyer, McKenna Ziemke, Belle Haefner, Elissa Moonen), 4x100m (Sydney Meyer, Elissa Moonen, Belle Haefner, Rylee Bell), and the 4x400m (Jaylen Struck-Schmitz, McKenna Ziemke, McKenna Herrmann, Tavashia Hill) relays will advance to the section meet as well.
The boys’ track team took second place with a total score of 144 points and will be sending participants to compete in 13 out of 18 events at the section meet.
Seniors Noah Dauwalter and Josh Hennes threw well enough to move on to the section meet. Noah Dauwalter also took fourth place in discus with a throw of 121’ 9”, advancing to the section meet.
Drew Hastings, a junior, will run both the one and two mile at the section meet. He took first in the one mile with a time of 4:34.52, a new school record, breaking his own for the mark.
Also competing at the section meet is senior Elliot Rudd who will run the 400m dash. Hunter Schmidt, a senior, will compete at sections in the 100m and 300m hurdles.
The boys’ team will also send the 4x100m (Josh Yeates, Elliot Barnes, Max Larson, Daniel Cooper), 4x200m (Elijah Roell, Josh Gregory, Josh Yeates, Daniel Coope), 4x400m (Josh Yeates, Ben Hunsader, Hunter Schmidt, Elliot Rudd) relays to sections as well.
Overall, the subsection meet for the Belle Plaine track and field athletes was successful for everyone. The section meet will be held on Saturday, June 1, at Mankato West.
