After weather earlier this summer delayed the TF Cricket Fields from officially opening in May, the season finally got its proper kickoff on June 2, with loads of high-level cricket. But for the fields which are entering their second year, the year is just getting started.
Already the field has hosted a celebrity U.S. national team player and has launched “the Tigers,” Belle Plaine’s first official U16 cricket team.
The Tigers, coached by Karan Kapoor, a former International Cricket Council player from Botswana, are in the midst of regular competition with established adult teams in the fields’ T30 tournament from now until mid-July on Saturdays and Sundays. The prize for that tournament is $4000.
The Tigers already have a win over Strykers Paladin.
Those wishing to learn more about cricket can do so at the weekly “cricket and cocktails” sessions from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays in June. The sessions involve live play for people to watch or take part in, followed by a social cocktail hour at Johan’s Bar at 117 Meridian St. N. Johan’s will be donating a portion of their sales to support the Tigers team as well as youth cricket programs.
