After a successful girls basketball season, three Belle Plaine athletes were chosen for the MRC All-Conference Girls Basketball Team. A fourth athlete earned honorable mention.

Senior Sarah Lenz was selected by the MRC coaches as the 2020-21 MRC Player of the Year, repeating last year’s award.  She was a four-time all-conference selection, five-time letter winner, and honorable mention all-state this year.  She averaged 19.5 points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals in 11 MRC games.

“Sarah was a pure scorer and shot the long range three as well hit the mid-range shot off the dribble.  She scored at the rim and got herself to the free throw line,” said Coach Mindy Chevalier. “She was a three-year captain and great leader on and off the court.”

Sarah is the daughter of Julie and Matt Lenz and is headed to the University of Jamestown next year to play basketball.

Senior Lauren Johnson is a three-time all-conference player, five-time letter winner, and two-time honorable mention all-state player.  She averaged 12.4 points, four rebounds, two assists, and 1.3 steals per game in the 11-game MRC season.

“Lauren was a very versatile player for the Tigers who shot the long-range three, hit midrange shots as well, and got to the basket and free throw line (where she shot 90 percent).  Lauren had great post moves from the block and created a difficult matchup for opponents.  She was a captain and great leader for the team on and off the court,” said Coach Chevalier.

Lauren is the daughter of Jean and Eric Johnson and is headed to Bethel University to play basketball.

Junior Leah Lenz averaged 11.3 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals per game.  She was a very versatile player who could shoot the three and also attack the basket off the dribble.  She also scored from the block.  Leah shot 62 percent of her 2-point attempts, 46 percent from the 3-point line, and 73 percent from the free throw line.

“She was a tough matchup for teams because of her length and athleticism.  She was one of the best defenders, shot blockers, and rebounders, for the Tigers.  The team looks forward to her return for next season,” said Chevalier.

Leah is the daughter of Julie and Matt Lenz.

Junior McKenna Ziemke earned honorable mention.

Mindy Chevalier of Belle Plaine High School and Kris Gustin of Mayer Lutheran High School were named MRC Girls Basketball Coaches of the Year.
