The Belle Plaine High School Girls’ Basketball Team played their season opener in Fairfax against Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop, and things went off without a hitch in the non-conference matchup Thursday, Nov. 29.
The Tigers came out firing with scrappy defense led by Sarah Lenz with four steals. Both Lauren Johnson and Jaylen Struck-Schmitz had a steal each. That defense backed GFW into a corner and on their heels as the halfway mark approached. But no defense is complete without a solid offense.
Again Lenz, along with Lauren Johnson, shined with 23 and 18 points, respectively. Ten points came from Paige Narveson, who also led the team in blocks with three.
“Our defensive pressure was a key component to generating quick offense and easy baskets,” Coach Mindy Chevalier said. “Offensively, I thought we did a great job handling their full court pressure and scrappy play.
GFW was scrappy indeed and capitalized on most mistakes the Tigers made, resulting in 13 turnovers over the span of the game.
But where there were mistakes, there were also strong drives, and by the end of the first half, the Tigers were up 37-20.
The second half proved to be a similar story. The Tigers held onto a 20-plus point lead for the majority of play, until a late run from GFW closed the gap slightly. But it was too little too late, and the Tigers walked away with a 63-50 victory.
The Tigers shot 32% over the course of the game and went four for 19 on threes.
“Great win for our team as a whole,” Chevalier said.
The team was scheduled to play Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Le Sueur-Henderson, after this issue of the Herald went to press.
