Quality at-bats - that’s what  Coach Brent Jaeger was looking for from his softball team heading into 2021. Be more competitive in the batter’s box.

On Friday afternoon, April 23, in Maple River, the Tigers improved to 3-0 on the young season, including 2-0 in the MRC, pounding out 16-hits in a 13-0, five-inning victory over Maple River.

“Everyone hit the ball hard,” said Jaeger, “and all are starting to have more quality at bats.”

After a scoreless first at-bat, the Tigers plated runs in each of the final four frames.

Cece Giesen and Lauren Johnson paced the offense with three hits apiece. Brooke McGlinchey had a pair of doubles, and Abby Dalchow and Josie Schmidt also collected a pair of hits. Lauren Walter and Cameron Chard hit home runs.

In the circle, Giesen collected her second victory of the season, pitching five innings and not allowing a runner past second base. The senior struck out nine and walked three, allowing just two hits.

“Cece was strong in the circle for us,” Jaeger said.

Last Tuesday, April 20, the Tigers collected 13 hits in a 9-3 victory over Sibley East, their second MRC triumph in as many tries.

“A good pitching performance from Ciara Fahey helped give us an opportunity to get our bats going,” Jaeger said. “We also had a chance to identify a few things that we need to work on, both defensively and with our baserunning.”

Johnson had another three-hit night, as did Chard. Dalchow and Brueggemeier had two hits apiece.

Fahey pitched all seven innings, allowing six hits and striking out eight while walking just one.

Looking Ahead

The Tigers will get an early look at one of the MRC favorites, Norwood Young America, on Thursday, April 29, when it visits for a double header. The Tigers also travel to St. Clair to play St. Clair/Loyola on Friday, April 30.
