Jordyn Williams (front) and Greta Steinhagen competed at the Subsection Track and Field Meet

Jordyn Williams (front) and Greta Steinhagen  competed at the Subsection Track and Field Meet at LS-H on Thursday, June 3.

The Tigers girls track and field team continued to out run, jump, and throw its opponents at last Thursday’s Subsection 7 track and field meet in LeSueur.

Belle Plaine won 14 of the 18 events and will send at least one athlete in every event to this Saturday’s Section 2AA championships at Mankato West.

The top four individuals and top two relays advance from Subsections. The top two performers at Saturday’s section meet will advance to state competition as well as  those who perform above a pre-determined standard in their event.

“The girls demonstrated an ability to perform at a high level, despite the five-hour meet in very hot weather,” said Coach Richard Foust.

The Tigers ran away from the six challengers in the seven-team field, amassing 286 points, well ahead of Sibley East (103.5), Tri-City United (95.5), Minnesota Valley Lutheran (90.5), G-F-W (53.5), and LS-H (43).

Belle Plaine won all four relay events with each recording its best performance of the season. The team of Syndey Meyer, McKenna Ziemke, Bella Haefner, and Lizzy Schmidt won both the 4x200m and the 4x800m; Meyer. Elissa Moonen, Haefner, and Rylee Bell won the 4x100m; Tavasha Hill, Ziemke, Malina Koepp, and Schmidt won the 4x400m.

Other top finishers included Hayley O’Brien in the 100m hurdles. Kelli Reitz and Marley Ziemke were third and fourth, respectively. O’Brien also won the 300m hurdles. Haefner and Bell took the top two spots in the 100m dash, and Schmit won the 400m with Hill finishing third.

Koepp won the 800 meter by 11 seconds, and Moonen was the high jump winner. Kenzie Nordby and Emma Driehorst finished third and fourth. It was a top-three sweep in the pole vault, with Schmidt, Alaina Herrmann, and Reitz taking the top three spots. Same story in the long jump, with Koepp, Haefner, and Nordby finishing one-two-three. Koepp also won the triple jump with Ziemke third and Nordby fourth.

Leah Lenz’s throw of 36-3.75 won the shot put and was within four inches of the school record.

Best Ever True Team Finish

This year’s state true team meet was held virtually, with each team submitting its results for a “paper” meet. The Tigers used last week’s Minnesota River Conference meet for its effort.

The Tigers recorded its highest finish ever, scoring 497 points for a third place finish. Rocori was the state champion with 546.5 points, followed by Rockford’s 508.5. Willmar was fourth in the 12-team event with 486 points.

The 4x400m relay team of Hill, McKenna Ziemke, Koepp, and Schmidt took first place in 4:13.83. Leah Lenz was third in the shot put.

Each team had two competitors in each event for a total of 24. First place was worth 24 points, second place 23, third place 22 and so on down to 24th place, which was worth a single point.
